I don’t know about you but I’m that girl (okay…I guess woman) who puts off getting regular checks for really long periods of time. For example, the only reason I’ve had pap smears even close to regularly is because I got pregnant and my gyno made me…I didn’t go to the dentist for 12 years straight and am yet to have a breast exam.

I’m not proud of it…but god, getting pap smears and going to the dentist are the pits aren’t they?

Recently, and since I turned 35 (GOOD GOD) I’ve gotten a little more serious about my health. I’ve had a few routine checks and yes, they’re just as annoying as you remember…especially when you have two little kids you have to coordinate around.

Here’s what I learned…just incase you ever want to get on my band wagon.

SKIN:

Get yearly check ups for your skin. And those at high risk aren’t always the fair freckly kind…my husband has SUPER dark skin and he’s had more dots and spots removed than my pasty white freckly mum has and she’s in her 60s. If you’re not going to get a proper check any time soon just monitor your own skin as much as possible and if anything changes colour or shape get that shit looked at.

TEETH:

A dentist visit once a year is what ‘they’ recommend.

PAP SMEARS:

Yep, every two years ladies…and you should start within 2 years of the first time you’ve had sex over the age of 20.

HEART HEALTH:

This is the one I had no idea about – and the truth is we should know more about this as it’s one of the leading causes of death for women. You should have your blood pressure checked every two years after the age of 18.

If you’re over 45 you should have blood tests done every five years to check cholesterol and triglcerides.

DIABETES CHECK:

Depending on your risk levels you will need to be checked every one to three years. Here is a list of women at risk:

  • are over 45 years old and obese (BMI over 30)
  • had gestational diabetes in a pregnancy
  • have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • have a family history of diabetes
  • are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander aged over 35 years
  • belong to certain ethnic groups – including Pacific Islander and Sri Lankan.
BREAST CANCER CHECK:
If you notice any breast changes you must go to your doctor immediately. Women between the ages of 50-74 without any family history should have their breasts checked every two years. If you have family history of breast cancer it is best to make a plan with your doctor.
EYE CHECKS:
If you haven’t noticed any changes earlier than 40 you’re good to go but after 40 all women should have eye examinations.
