The one thing that has made a MASSIVE difference to my son’s sleep

Something I have to practise a lot is mindfulness. That word gets thrown around a fair bit but I’m ALL for it.

I have a mind that runs a million miles an hour. 99.9% of the time the reality of any situation is really workable, but my mind doesn’t always have the ability to slow down and simplify the shit out of everything. I have to work hard at the world not ‘ending’ on a daily basis and practicing mindfulness is essential for me. I do simple things like slow down my breathing and inhale and exhale extra loudly so I focus on my breath and snap out of the mind race when I’m feeling anxious. I also have meditation as a part of my life. I don’t always do it every day but it is something that I find has enormous benefits. I have a few other little tricks that I do to bring me back to ‘the now’, which is never as catastrophic as the place my mind has taken me to. You can read them here.

One thing I want to teach my boys from a really young age is mindfulness. I think it’s as important if not more important than teaching them how to read or write. Mindfulness will give them the skills to cope with stress, relationship difficulties and the anxiety and pressure of leading a busy life…which we all bloody do.

mA few months ago when my eldest son Bax was having trouble sleeping we started doing the Smiling Mind meditation with him before he went to bed. Smiling Mind is a not for profit organisation started by a mate of mine Jane Martino, that works to make mindful meditation accessible to everyone. It is a simple guided meditation app with a kids section that is Ah-Mazing. I love when on occasion we forget to pop on the app we hear a little voice call out “guys, we didn’t do my meditation, I wanna do it”. It cracks me up every time because never in my wildest dreams would I have thought about doing mediation with a kid who isn’t even in prep. He loves it though, it calm and relaxes him and once the meditation (we do the five minute one) has finished he usually just roles over and goes to sleep. We don’t do this every night but try to do it as often as we can. I think it is an incredible gift to be able to give our kids. Teaching them how to slow their minds will be so beneficial in the long run.
