The reminder from one mum to another to love our post-baby bodies

Our bodies change after we have babies, it’s inevitable. We may try to get back to our ‘pre’ baby weight, and may even be successful, but even if we are, the way our bodies look and feel is different. And it can be hard to accept.

For me, there are days I feel like super woman for bringing my babe into the world, I think my body is the bee’s knees for what it’s managed to do, and other days I wonder why the hell my stomach can’t look like it used to and feel self conscious even around my husband.

Along with a very real black and white image of her post-baby body, Melbourne mum Laura Mazza, from the blog Mum on the Run, penned a very honest exchange between her and her husband on her Facebook page. In the post, she let readers in on the apology she made to her husband for not looking like the woman he fell in love with. This is what she had to say;

“The body he fell in love with was toned, it had muscles, there were no stretch marks on my belly, none on my boobs, no gut from muscle separation.

The body he fell in love with fit into tight jeans, could walk into a shop and grab any size and walk out, knowing it fit.

This body now couldn’t shop at those stores, and mostly wears leggings. His body stayed the same, but mine changed in every way. It isn’t fair,” she writes.

Laura’s husband responded to her post in the most perfect way.

“You’re right. It isn’t the body I fell in love with. Instead it’s a body that grew our children, it fed our children, it comforted our children, it made life. Your body is the one I fall in love with every day. I didn’t know what love was until I saw this body and found out all it could do, so thank you.”

Laura ends with the post with some advice any mum could use every now and then.

“Do not be ashamed of what you have, or what your mum body looks like, there’s plenty of time to give up cake in the future, for now, enjoy the moments you have, and enjoy the fact that you have made something that is worth every stretch mark and every dimple.”

Damn right. Lets eat the cake, we’ve earned it.
