What constitutes a beautiful post-baby body to you? Is it a quick return to pre-pregnancy form? Is it slimmer than it was before? Larger?
The fact of the matter is, many women have gripes about their bodies after baby. Whether it be stretch-marked skin, extra weight or sagging breasts, a woman’s body can become unrecognisable after birth – and that is often VERY confronting.
There’s no doubt that we go through MANY changes during pregnancy and these changes can often remain with us for a long time (or forever) after. For decades we have been bombarded with images of the “perfect body” but in reality, is there anything more perfect than a body that has grown and delivered a human being?
A post-baby body in any form, from non-existent tummy to rounded deliciousness, is beautiful – and the differences in those bodies need to be seen more. We need to see bodies like mine, or yours in the same way we need to see ones like Rebecca Judd and Erin McNaught.
Because we’re all bloody beautiful. We just need to see ourselves represented that way more in the mainstream media, and not just in the token ‘body love’ issue.
We’re slowly getting there, thanks to people like Neely Ker-Fox and her project ‘Perfect Imperfections’ – a collection of photographs celebrating the beauty of women’s post-baby bodies and the variety of forms they come in. Neely described the project as “so much more than photos of stretch marks, or cellulite.”
“It’s about women coming out of the shadows and discussing their everyday struggles in an effort to normalize, to empower and to educate.”
Neely’s hopes are that her images will inspire future generations, saying, “The more society is exposed to these real people, the more women will feel empowered to talk about fertility issues, postpartum depression, bullying, and the more others can find peace in knowing they are not alone in their struggles.”
