Remember TEMPTATION ISLAND?!? You are going to love these blasts from the past

The late 90’s and early 2000’s were party years for many of us who now find ourselves in our dirty 30’s and beyond. They were the years before marriage and kids, the years where we unapologetically rocked our socks off.

Even though those days are long gone for me, I still like to close my eyes from time to time and remember the good ol’ days.

Come with me as we look over our shoulders, far, far into the distance and remember all the things that were wrong, but oh-so-right about the late 90s and early 2000’s.

The music:

The late 90’s and early 2000’s saw us say adios to the grunge that dominated the early-to-mid 90’s and hellooooo to dance and techno. It was loud, it was thumping and it was perfect for making a spectacle of yourself on a podium in a dimly-lit nightclub.

These were two of the best…

Embarrassing confession: Sometimes when I’m driving by myself on the freeway, I put one of these songs on so loud that my windows shake and I daydream about that time I danced in A CAGE at Heat nightclub in Melbourne. Embarrassingly good times.

The drinks:

It was all about the pre-mix back then, but we’d graduated from the unrefined UDL cans and upgraded to something MUCH classier. This was essentially the same thing, just in a glass bottle. Fancy.

Lemon Ruski: These were KING and probably made Stolichnaya more money in the 90’s than Kanye and Kim combined.

Sub-Zero: With a dash of raspberry of course, to take the kick out of the awful acid-burn as it rushed down your throat.

Oh no.

Oh no.

The fashion:

I hate to say it, but the fashion of the 90’s/2000’s ranked pretty high on the skank-o-metre. We didn’t think so back then, but I’m sure we’ve all got a million photos to prove it.

Speaking of photos, remember when you dropped your film roll off at your local Kodak shop or Coles for developing? You’d wait a few days and if you thought they were going to be good, you’d order double prints. Picking them up was SO exciting and you’d huddle together with your mates to check out who looked the hottest how they turned out. You probably put them in a photo album, and maybe wrote a caption at the back of the pic.

THIS is what our photos came in. Remember NEGATIVES??

Before the rise of the skinny jean, it was all about the lowest of low-rise hipster jeans. They were so low that you were in one of two camps – girls who just never, ever sat down or bent over, or girls who embraced the bum-crack display and saw g-strings as an accessory. They were bootleg and sometimes, had an exposed button-fly.

Halter-neck tops and boob tubes ruled and it didn’t matter if we went braless because our boobs were beautiful and perky and stayed where they were meant to be. I miss my year 2000 boobs.

The platform shoes we bagged our parents for wearing in the 70’s were BACK and in possibly the most embarrassing line ever written, I even had a pair of platform thongs. Foam platform thongs. These were probably only out-uglied by high-heeled thongs.

Wrong. On every level.

Wrong. On every level.

There was only one cap worth wearing back then, and it was Von Dutch.

The phone:

It was Nokia or nothin’ and long before Candy Crush, there was Snake and it was glorious.

Snake was KING. On the Nokia 3210 of course

On our TV:

Reality TV was in full and fabulous force and for us Aussies, THIS was the one to watch..

Remember Temptation Island?? It was so wrong, but SO good. I wish they’d bring it back…

Temptation Island. THE BEST!!

Then there was The Simple Life, when Paris Hilton ruled and Nicole was her funny side-kick.

With Foxtel came Newlyweds. We thought Nick and Jessica were going to be together forever…

We thought they'd last forever

On our bodies:

Bellybutton rings were the ultimate accessory. I resisted this one.

Belly rings - the danglier, the better

BUT I did indulge in an asian symbol tattoo. I chose one that means “woman” – you know, in case I ever forget I have a vagina.

Anyone else get one of these?

So if you happen to pass some crazy-looking blonde chick in a Mazda playing Insomnia by Faithless so loud you can hear it 50 metres away, it’ll be me.

Speaking of which….

How many of these beauties do you remember? PLEASE share some of your 90’s / 2000’s nostalgia with us! We LOVE hearing from you guys.

I LOVE this. I had no idea what those songs were called but instantly recognise them. Nothing gets me as pumped up at the gym (for my 15 min run) then a bit of early 00s euphoria tracks. Pretending I am smashing it in the London clubs again instead of working on the 2 baby tubbiness. I even closed my eyes and lifted up my arms (briefly) once.

  • Show+Tell

HA! We do that too Rachael – funny…xxx
