Parenting, What's On Our Mind

The most realistic maternity photographs you’ve ever seen

Did you have maternity photos taken? I’ve got several friends that had them done – you know, with the dad kissing the belly or mum looking perfect in glamour hair and make up and a thin sheet draped over her bump. Not my thing, but totally gorgeous.

Stace and I both have the un-love with being pregnant in common and poor Brooke, well, she spewed every day of her pregnancy thanks to some epic morning sickness. Monty, however, adored being pregnant and is possibly one of the most beautiful pregnant women I’ve ever seen. She rocks a baby belly like Beyonce rocks a leotard. Flawlessly.

I loved feeling my babies moving inside me and I loved being able to eat (several) bowls of pasta (in one sitting) and proudly letting it all hang out, but I didn’t feel nice when I was pregnant. I felt big, clunky and swollen, and you know “the glow” every one talks about? Nope, never got it. I did get some pretty decent breakouts for the first time in my life though. I got cankles, I got enormous, veiny boobs and I got a throbbing vagina that felt swollen 24/7. I wouldn’t take any of those things back for a second, but I wish I’d felt a little more elegant when I was pregnant.

US-based photographer Danielle Guenther’s most recent maternity photo series called What the Bump?! are ones I (and maybe you?) can definitely relate to. Danielle says of the photographs, “Some of us are doing it for the first time and are super excited, but then I have friends who are on their second or third or even fourth child and they are over it. Being able to showcase and shine light on this really amazing thing we do as women is the point of this series.”

They’re not dreamy and they’re not idyllic, but they are the reality for many pregnant mummas out there who JUST WANT THAT BABY OUT.
