TV rules. How many hours do you let your kids watch?

My 19 month old is obsessed with Dora. I’m not exaggerating when I say OBSESSED. This morning when I got her out of her cot the first thing she said was ‘Dora’. When I turn Dora off she throws herself on the floor and cries and screams. She thinks Dora is her best friend and she can’t live without her. My husband sent me a text today saying we need to come up with a strategy to nip this in the bud. I couldn’t agree more. But HOW?!!! My kid is a Dora junkie.

What are you doing to us Dora?!!!

I try to limit how much Dora she watches because at this rate she will learn to count in Spanish before English. (At least she will be bilingual).

We do a heap of things that don’t involve watching the TV, like frequenting the parks and play centres around 432 times a week and I also try to encourage her to play shops and dolls and trucks and ANYTHING that is not focused around the TV or Dora.

I pop an ep or two of Dora on in the morning so I can get myself showered and ready for the day and I’m okay with her watching another ep or two at night before bed. But I don’t want to put any TV on during the day, it’s a rule I’m trying to stick to, but lately it’s becoming HARD. I have a very strong-willed toddler who doesn’t like me standing between her and her God, Dora. The fact she’s asking for Dora more, means I have to say no more and we are spending half the day having Dora-induced tantrums and it’s not fun. Do I keep standing my ground and eventually she’ll learn the rules or do I relax a little to her crack that is Dora The Explorer?

What are your TV rules and how do you enforce them? HELP!!
