How much time do you reckon you spent watching commercials as a kid? Heaps.
If you grew up in the 80’s like us, you’d surely remember a time when streaming services and on-demand viewing didn’t exist, so sitting through four or five advert breaks in between our fave shows was the norm. And because our TVs practically raised us back in the day, we saw A LOT of ads. Some were funny and some had annoying jingles that got stuck in our head for weeks… but only one haunted our dreams harder than Pennywise the clown ever did.
This commercial hit our screens back in 1987, when the HIV/AIDS epidemic exploded into our conscience and sat firmly in the forefront of everyone’s minds. You remember this, right? The grim reaper (who obviously bowled in a professional league on the weekends, ‘cos: mad skilzzzz) lined up unsuspecting peeps from the community (the ‘pins’) and sent them flying with some impressive strikes and a very dramatic spare on that mum and bub.
Have a look…
That shit is FUCKED. UP.
AIDS is clearly no laughing matter, but looking back at this ad through a 2020 lens with grown-up eyes, the dramatics of those people going flying tickles the funny bone a bit. Back then though, it was really vital in opening up important conversations and awareness about safe sex and contraception that were previously taboo. It also demonstrated that EVERYONE was at risk if they weren’t careful, not ‘only gays and IV drug users’ like society once thought. It also ruined bowling for us for a good few years.
There was also this AIDS ad…
Here are some other crackers you might remember from back in the day…
