As far as true crime podcasts go, the market is well and truly saturated – but if you’re looking for something a little different, then My Favorite Murder is one to add to your must-listen list. Presented by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, these two mates from Cali have managed to do the unthinkable; mesh some of the most frightening true crimes in history with a side of humour. It sounds odd; disrespectful even, but they do it in a way that somehow manages to take the edge off the seriously dark content they’re presenting.
In each episode, Karen and Georgia sit down together and each brings a well-researched true crime story to the table. It’s the bone-chilling stuff you want from a true crime pod, but the relaxed way they present it is like listening to your besties chatting over a coffee. They never make digs at the victims of the murders themselves, but they’re funny observations give an injection of giggles to take the edge off in the moments you really need it. And they make those of us who are genuinely fascinated with true crime feel a little more comfortable about our morbid fascination. Entertainment Weekly said it best when they described the pod’s gruesome content as “…. discussed in the playful, irreverent tone of the best grown-ass-ladies slumber party you’ve ever attended.”
Karen and Georgia are seriously obsessed with true crime and, like so many of us, totally terrified of getting murdered. My Favorite Murder is one of the top-rated podcasts in the world and they’ve got a massive fan base of ‘Murderinos’ aka fellow true crime obsessives. The girls have only been going since the beginning of 2016, which is testament to how great this podcast really is.
There are SO many crimes to listen to in this podcast and they don’t just cover the big stories we’ve all heard a billion times, so chances are there are tonnes here that you’ve never heard of. In addition to their weekly recordings, they’ve added live podcasts to their line-up as well as ‘minisodes,’ which are shorter eps where listeners send in their hometown crime stories, close calls and hauntings.
So if you’re looking for a cracker podcast to get in your ears, give My Favorite Murder a go. And in the words of their now famous sign-off, ‘Stay Sexy, Don’t Get Murdered.’
If you want a taste and not sure where to start from their massive catalogue of episodes, one of the latests called ‘Project Artichoke’ (released on Feb 22 this year) is a good one to start with. The ladies chat about the super strange 1989 murder of nurse Cindy James and the awful McStay family murders in 2010.
