Without actually naming Donald Trump, Meryl Streep used her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes to condemn the President Elect. Something I am sure many people would like to do but wouldn’t have the guts, but not our Meryl.
The actress called out the U.S President for imitating a disabled reporter at the 2017 Golden Globes. She said:
“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in the country imitated a disables reporter; someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back.
“It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t in a movie, it was real life,” Streep continued.
“And this instinct to humiliate when it’s modelled by someone on a public platform, by someone powerful; it filters down into everyone’s life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”
Meryl also used the very public opportunity to celebrate the diversity of actors in Hollywood, taking another dig at Donald Trump. She listed the birth places and hometowns of many high-profile Hollywood stars before explaining Hollywood is “just a bunch of people from other places.” She went on to say: “Hollywood is crawling with foreigners and outsiders, and if we kick ’em all out, we’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”
Speaking to The New York Times, Donald Trump said while he had not watched the awards, he was “not surprised” by Meryl’s comments, nor that he was a subject of controversy for “liberal movie people.” He even went on to call her a “Hilary lover’ referring to Democratic nominee Hilary Clinton.
