For as many sad and tragic things that are happening in this world, there are also many more incredible, beautiful and life changing things happening. In the last year there has been the #MeToo movement and the general fight for women’s rights and equality…then came the latest movement called March for Our Lives created and organized by #NeverAgain, a group of students who survived the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida which saw a former student kill 17 students.

The Stoneman Douglas shooting was the eighth mass school shooting this year. The student and organisers used the march to call on lawmakers to address the issue of gun violence in American schools by implementing comprehensive gun control legislation.

According to a petition on the event’s website, March For Our Lives has three primary demands:
  1. Pass a law to ban the assault weapons frequently used to carry out mass shootings
  2. Stop the sale of high-capacity magazines, restricting the amount of ammunition
  3. Close loopholes in America’s background checks and implement laws that require background checks on every gun purchase, including those that occur online or at gun shows

The face of this latest movement came from an incredible young woman who has left an imprint on the hearts and minds of the entire world. Emma Gonzalez survived the shooting and is demanding change – she single handedly forced people to hear her and join her in the fight.

It seems quite clear to me that the battle over gun control in America is going to take potentially our entire lives to change, but the call to make it harder for people to obtain semi-automatic and full automatic weapons is reasonable and absolutely achievable. Surely America can handle that?

Kids are scared to go to school, and that alone is sickening. School is a sacred, safe and important place for kids to be able to grow, adapt and enjoy their education and friendships…not a place to fear. Not a place to walk through a metal detector each morning. Not a place for any form of devastation.

March For Our Lives brought people out of every corner of the USA and the world. Celebrities came from near and far to use their voice and platform to demand change…and boy, was it a cracker. No one could deny the effect this march will potentially have on the fight for better gun control.

Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande all came out and sang their most influential, real and appropriate songs for the crowds…and they all made a dent in this fight.
