Hold on to your rainbow-soaked tassels everyone, because there is some new tea in the Miley/Liam saga courtesy of Miley herself.
Just when we thought the crown for biggest new music release of the day was sure to be Taylor Swift with “Lover” (the third track from her upcoming album of the same name), Miley has done a Stephen Bradbury and swooped in from literally nowhere to release the heartbreaking banger “Slide Away”.
With lyrics like: “Once upon a time it was made for us, woke up one day and it turned to dust. Baby, we were found, but now we’re lost, so it’s time to let it go…” it’s clear that Miley has drawn a line in the sand of her relationship with Liam and there’s no going back.
She goes a step further to pour gas on the fire that is the rumour mill about the cause of their break-up with lyrics like: “I want my house in the hills, don’t want the whisky and pills…”
I mean, the artwork accompanying the lyric video is literally bottles of whisky and pills floating in the sea, you guys. Clearly, licking the sledgehammer in ‘Wrecking Ball’ wasn’t subtle enough the first time around.
Miley hinted earlier this week that she was back in the studio and not just living the #HotGirlSummer dream, but no one was expecting new music quite so soon.

Whilst we don’t have a music video yet, this is a much more introspective Miley mourning the loss of their relationship rather than the aggressive, pelvic thrusting overtones of the past.
“Move on, we’re not 17, I’m not who I used to be,” Miley sings: “You say that everything changed, You’re right, we’re grown now…”
I was not prepared at all for the flood of emotions Swifty and Miley have given me. It’s supposed to be “cheers to the freakin’ weekend”, you guys, not ‘look out a rain-soaked window and get all melancholic’, yet here we are.
Meanwhile, Swifty’s latest banger has total Mazzy Star ‘Fade Into You’ vibes and is a subtle throwback to her country/pop vibe and stans are loving it sick. It’s hopeful, romantic and beautifully optimistic, leading some fans to speculate that marriage is on the cards for Taylor and Joe Alwyn, especially with lyrics like: “Ladies and gentlemen will you please stand / I take this magnetic force of a man to be my – Lover” and “My heart’s been borrowed and yours has been blue, All’s well that ends well to end up with you…”
So, whilst one pop princess is celebrating her current love, the other is saying goodbye to hers…
