Zac Efron as Ted Bundy is the trailer you need to see

If someone was to look at my Google history, they’d think I was planning a murder. It feels a bit icky to admit, but I’m borderline addicted to true crime – and I think the only reason I AM admitting it is because it’s become a somewhat acceptable obsession over the last few years. Actually, it’s become a BIG business, with podcasts, movies, books and docos being pumped out and devoured by the curious among us at lightning speed.

Like so many, I’ve always been fascinated by Ted Bundy, mainly because of all the words that have been used to describe him over the years: Charming. Educated. Polite. Handsome. Smart.  He presented as the complete ‘package’, all while being one of the most cunning and evil motherfuckers to ever walk the planet.

Netflix’s newest true crime offering, Confessions of a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, explores as much of Ted Bundy’s mind, in his own words, that we’ve ever seen and is being snapped up and praised by hungry true crime enthusiasts the world over. But this week, it’s been the release of the trailer for the feature film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, starring Zac Efron in the lead role as Bundy, that has lots of people riled up – and not in a good way.

Check out the trailer below…

People are really, really pissed off by this trailer. It’s been deemed as disrespectful to Bundy’s victims, the young women who were brutalised in the most shocking ways possible and then viciously murdered by him. To be honest, I felt super weird and conflicted about how attractive I found Zac Efron in this. The trailer is snappy and sharp, an upbeat tune underscoring images of Zac (or Ted?) being hot and charming the pants off everyone he comes across. He’s engaging and sexy and somehow reels you in to the point that you forget the evils of who you’re watching.

And then, you realise that is the whole idea behind this movie. All that ‘shiny’ stuff is what made Ted Bundy’s victims unsuspecting of his motives until it was too late. It was the stuff that gave him a twisted sort of celebrity status during his trial and made him the most warped and revolting sex symbol of all time – one that saw women flock to the court room to support and write countless letters to during his time in prison. It’s the stuff we need to keep in the back of our minds forever – that charm, charisma, looks and smarts mean nothing… because even behind the most perfect looking citizen can be an evil that is incomprehensible to most.

If you haven’t seen the Netflix doco, I highly recommend it…..

The Teacher’s Pet was another true crime story that had us captivated in 2018. You can hear us talk about that and heaps more in our podcast below. Have a listen, then come on over and subscribe to our pod here.
