It seems 2018 is officially the year of the 80’s fashion comeback. We’ve seen scrunchies, ‘mom’ jeans, logo tees, bike shorts and now – the ultimate in 80’s denim is back on the menu. It’s time to say hello again to the splotchiest trend of them all…. Acid Wash.
Katy Perry recently posted a snap on her Insta rocking a pink, fringed jacket and the ultimate 80’s, high-rise, hard acid wash jeans your eyeballs have ever seen. And it isn’t just a bit of Katy-quirk going on. Stella McCartney’s Spring 2018 runway was chock-a-block with acid-filled designs, with other farshun heavyweights like Balmain, Ralph Lauren and Miu Miu filling their shows with the throwback look.
But if the classic acid wash of the 80’s scarred you too much the first time around, the 2018 take has an option for everyone. A more subtle wash in grey/black tones as seen on Margot Robbie below are a good option for embracing the trend but not taking it full throttle…
The ‘new’ acid wash is also a little more, hmmmm…. acidic? Like literal splashes of acid thrown onto denim for a more contrasty, less marbled, look as seen on the Ralph Lauren Spring/Summer ’18 show below..
The line between looking current and a little too nostalgic is a fine one, so to keep it fresh, let one acid wash piece do the talking. Pair jeans with a minimalist top and some classic wheels like a pair or plain white sneakers or a killer pair of black heels, or drape an acid jacket over a shift dress or tee and midi skirt combo. Steer clear of adding 80’s accessories like scrunchies to the look, which will look way too OTT.
But if you wanna go the full hog, then you will likey Stella McCartney’s pieces a lot, which featured vests, jeans, jumpsuits and jackets in classic acid wash and tonnes of pockets to boot.
And if you’re keen to dip your toe (back) into the acid wash trend, then give these babies a go…
