No more washing our jeans- THIS is how the cool kids are doing

Jeans. I live in ’em. As someone who never really got the active wear memo (and let’s face it, isn’t really active) jeans are my go-to. You can dress them up with a blazer and heels, dress them down with a cozy jumper or tee – they literally go with EVERYTHING. I shudder to think how much coin I’ve dropped on jeans over the years and how many pairs I have hanging in my wardrobe. But the thing is, I always go back to my old faithfuls; the ones that I feel best in and that don’t dig in in all the annoying places.

During a recent chat with a friend, she told me she NEVER washes her jeans. I was shocked and more than a little grossed out because I wash my jeans every two to three wears.

But turns out my mate was on to something. According to the ‘jean experts’, we shouldn’t be washing our denim friends in the traditional way because it causes fading and changes their shape beyond repair. So what to do then?

Chuck 'em in a bag and you're good to go!

The answer, as it happens, lies in your freezer. Levi’s have specially-made canvas bags (with instructions) for the sole purpose of crisping up your denim and loads of those in the know suggest popping them in a sealable bag, like a Ziploc one, and leaving them to make friends with your Ben and Jerry’s overnight. Many advise double-bagging to stop your jeans absorbing any of those freezer smells and to avoid them getting wet in the icy conditions. Doing this once a month is the recommendation.

The cold temperature of your freezer is said to banish any smells your jeans have accumulated along the way and more importantly, keep the shape and colour in tip-top condition. The freezing temps are also said to do away with a lot of the bacteria (not all) as well. While it doesn’t get rid of stains, they can be fixed with a bit of old fashioned spot cleaning.

Even though loads of people swear by this method, I’m not sure I’m totally convinced and just can’t imagine not giving them a proper, sudsy clean. But if you’re keen to give it a go, it’s time to clear out those frozen chops and stockpiled soups to make room for your denim pals to get their chill on. Jeans have NEVER been cooler. Haaaaaaa.
