There are going to be some seriously annoyed coconut oil lovers out there right about now. Me? I’m doing okay. To be honest, coconut oil and I aren’t the best of friends, sorry, but I’m just not a huge fan of coconut oil (gasp!), please don’t judge me.

Now for the bad news. New research into the very popular coconut oil has shown that it may actually be doing you more harm that good. Eeek.

The American Heart Association have released a study on fats and their impact on cardiovascular health and  let’s just say coconut oil didn’t come out looking good.

“Researchers didn’t see a difference between coconut oil and other oils high in saturated fat, like butter, beef fat and palm oil. In fact, 82% of the fat in coconut oil is saturated, according to the data — far beyond butter (63%), beef fat (50%) and pork lard (39%).”

The take-away from that sentence is basically that there is twice as much saturated fat in coconut oil than in pork lard. Holy moly.

Another note-worthy highlight from the report is that they don’t recommend coconut oil as a health food. In fact they recommend against using it all-together. But they also don’t recommend butter so really, how much do they know?!

The AHA added the media have a part to play in the common belief that coconut oil is a better choice.

“A recent survey reported that 72 percent of the American public rated coconut oil as a ‘healthy food’ compared with 37 percent of nutritionists. This disconnect between lay and expert opinion can be attributed to the marketing of coconut oil in the popular press.”

As for using coconut oil on your face or hair – go right ahead. They are just talking about the oil you inhale in your gob here. But if you enjoy your coconut oil, go ahead I say, next week a new study will be done saying it is the holy grail again.

What’s your fave way to use coconut oil?
