This piece is brought to you by Hairhouse, but is my own hairy tale and thoughts. Mel x
Growing up as a teen in the 90’s, all I ever wanted was stick-straight hair. A flowing, shiny, silky, golden mane like Gwyneth’s. My genes, however, had other plans.
Back then, the only way to get my curly, frizzy mass of hair under control was to lay my head down on an ironing board and get my sister to iron it like a human t-shirt. It was hair abuse of the highest order, but gee whiz it felt gooooood to be able to run my fingers through my locks without my entire hand getting stuck in the knotty mess.
Fast forward many years and I’m still obsessed with my mane. The hair envy I get when a gorgeous ‘do passes my eyeballs is just as real now as it was in those adolescent days, but NEVER has it been easier to get my temperamental hair to do what I want it to.
It’s borderline embarrassing to admit just how many electric styling tools I’ve got in my bathroom cupboards, but at a time in my life where every day feels a bit like Groundhog Day, being able to easily switch up my hair on the reg is a bloody gift.
So if you’re in a bit of a hair rut and are keen to get your hands on some of the goodies that’ll give you a good hair day, every day, here are some ideas for your arsenal…
Remember when straighteners first came out and they were clunky and your hair used to get snagged in the comb bits and snap off? Those days are O.V.E.R. The new breed of straighteners are temp-controlled and glide straight through, making even the unruliest tresses as smooth as silk. The best bit? You get to snooze a little longer because all you’ll need in the way of morning styling is a simple finger-comb and you’re done. Brilliant!
Remember crimpers? The new hair wavers are essentially your fave 80’s hair appliance on steroids. The barrel is BIG on these guys, so instead of loads of little bends like the OG, you’ll get that perfect S-wave, mermaid-style in a flash.
A voluminous blow-out never goes out of style – and it isn’t solely an in-salon job anymore either. Invest in a top-notch hairdryer with a powerful motor that is lightweight (so you don’t need Schwarzenegger-style guns to operate it) and you can skip the salon and get a tonne of va-va-voom right in your own bathroom.
With beachy waves still reigning supreme, a quality pair of curling irons are a MUST. I rely on mine more than I’d like to admit because it’s got three detachable heads, perfect for customising your curl. Remember the larger the barrel, the looser the curl, so look for a big tong for more of a wave or smaller barrels for more defined, ringlet-style curls.
Hot air brushes:
The hot air brush is the ultimate in lazy-girl chic. These babies are essentially a hairdryer encased in a round bristle brush, so you can dry your hair out AND get loads of volume all with the one tool. No brushes or clips required. Genius!
