Unless you’ve had no access to TV/radio/internet/life, you’d know that the 91st Academy Awards went down at LA’s Dolby theatre today. While we flicked through the galleries of frocks and waited for the epic moment where Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper made sweet, sweet vocal love to each other while performing Shallow, something else happened.
A new advertisement for Nike was aired for the first time during the awards and to say that it’s an inspiring celebration of women and their sporting accomplishments is an understatement. The ‘Dream Crazier’ campaign filters through to so much more than the world of sport though; it’s moments we’ve all recognised as women and girls. Being called overly emotional, too bossy, delusional, hysterical and dramatic are things that so many of us can relate to, but this ad turns the whole concept of those words on their head. Because it’s within those perceptions that our power lies – because there is NOTHING like a challenge to bring out the beast, just like these incredible women have done.
With a stirring voice-over provided by sporting legend Serena Williams, who delivers the spine-tingling parting line: “So if they want to call you crazy? Fine. Show them what crazy can do,” the geniuses at Nike have nailed it again. The ad features legends such as Katherine Switzer, the first woman to compete in the Boston marathon, Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, US gymnastics champion Simone Biles, our very own Aussie soccer legend, Sam Kerr, Serena herself and many more fabulous women.
They are women who have carried on the baton of those who came before them and continue to smash their way through every single hurdle; making new records, setting the bar higher for those who’ll follow on and showing little girls everywhere that they can do ANYTHING – not only in sport, but in life.
This ad is compulsory viewing for everyone; men, women, children, the family pet – everyone. It will truly feed your soul. Have a watch below….
