baby born en caul

This footage of a baby born ‘en caul’ or in it’s own amniotic sac is down right incredible. Watching this video made me feel like I had an insight into my two daughter’s time in the womb, and even made me an itsy bitsy bit clucky.

This beautiful video has gone viral and we can totally see why. It’s almost hypnotising to watch this little bubba breathe through it’s umbilical cord, totally unaware it has been born. ‘En caul’ births are rare and happen in less than 1 in 80,000 births with most amniotic sacs broken during the process of birth. Many midwifes and doctors go their whole careers without seeing a baby born ‘en caul’.

There is much folklore around babies been born in their own amniotic sac, including that it is good luck and the child is destined for greatness. It feels pretty damn surreal to be able to witness this phenomenon up close. Truly incredible.
