Just when you thought you couldn’t be any more dazzled by the awesomeness of pregnancy and birth, a video comes along that gives us more of an insight into the bloody miracle of new life.
Aussie-based Midwife and Sleep Consultant, The Midwife Mumma AKA Amelia Lamont’s Insta page is filled with incredible pics and vids of all things babies, pregnancy and birth, but a video she shared a few days ago had us pressing re-play more times than we’d care to admit. The video is of an en caul birth, where the baby is born while still encased in the amniotic sac, and gives us a gorgeous look at what’s actually going on inside when that little babe of yours is wriggling around and kicking you in the ribs.
Take a look…

✨No one is sure where this video originated from or the gestation of this baby but far out how incredible is this?? A clearly premature or growth restricted Bub being born via Caesarian section still encapsulated in its caul (amniotic sac) — Very rare but this obstetrician obviously gave these parents a beautiful calm Caesarian section.. unbelievable seeing the fluid, space and movements bub has in its little home for so long .. love love love.
En caul births are a real rarity and occur in less than one in 80,000 births. While the baby in the video was born via C-section, en caul births can also happen when the baby is delivered vaginally too, as seen in this incredible story.
Chrissie Swan spoke to us about her decision to have elective C-sections with her three babies in the pod chat below. Subscribe here for more.
