Boy oh boy, can Oprah give a SPEECH! As part of the now iconic 75th Golden Globe Awards ceremony, Oprah received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her outstanding achievement to entertainment. And her acceptance speech was every bit as incredible as you’d expect – and then some. It was stirring and inspiring and summed up the reason women, particularly women of colour, have been fighting for so long. It was, without a doubt, one of the most chilling and uplifting speeches I’ve heard in my entire life. Perhaps the best.
Women are speaking up now more than ever and that is, in large part, thanks to courageous women like Oprah Winfrey. I feel so lucky that when I speak to my young kids about gender inequality, poor treatment of women and racism, they stare at me blankly like they’ve got NO idea what I’m talking about. Because for them, the idea that men and women are treated differently, that some men (not all, because God knows there are millions of beautiful men in this world) treat women with less respect than dirt, is just unfathomable. Their little brains can’t understand it because more and more, we are living in a time where this abhorrent behaviour is totally unacceptable – as it always should have been.
From all the women who have suffered and come before us, like Rosa Parks and Recy Taylor (who Oprah mentions in her speech), right up until the #metoo and Times Up movements, and every single woman who has suffered before, during and after those moments – the time has come.
There has never been a better time to be a woman… and it’s about fucking time.
Please do yourself a favour and watch this tremendous speech. It’s one that you’ll never forget.
