Remember perms? If you’re over, say, 35, you’ll remember what a big deal these were back in the 80s, when curly hair ruled the world. My sister used to sit for hours at the hairdresser, inhaling fumes that were as strong enough to make her eyes water, in pursuit of the perfect spiral perm. Those curls were tight AF. I, on the other hand, had natural curls that I HATED and saw me laying my teenage head on an ironing board to try and get my hair as straight as humanly possible.
It’s been a while since I rocked my natural curls because straight hair is so much easier to maintain, but guess what? Like we all know, what goes around comes around and perms are BACK BABY. With a modern update, natch.
The heavily-hairsprayed, crunchy, sky-high perms of old are out and in their place is the new and improved version; natural waves that boast more relaxed movement than tightly coiled poodle perfection. Think effortless, undone, tousled, uber cool beachy-ness. Celeb stylist George Papanikolas told InStyle, “There are also modern techniques where it can be straighter at the top half with the bend in the hair at the mid-lengths and ends. The other big change is using a larger rod to create a loose, soft bend in the hair. We’ve also seen a big shift away from the over-styled curling iron waves to a more natural air-dry texture.”
The result? Stunning, no fuss, ‘I woke up like this’ wavy perfection all day, erryday. Time to book in at the hairdresser I reckon…
