Everyone is always their best versions of themselves when they are on holidays, but my partner Sam and I pretty much take on whole new personalities. It’s like for most of the year we are fine, nice, whatever, then on holidays we are like YES, WE ARE ALIVEEEE!
For the last few years just after Christmas we have been heading to Byron Bay and this is where we truly are the best versions of ourselves. On top of being away from the daily hustle and bustle of busy lives, Byron has a hint of magic that we can’t get enough of.
Our kids love the extra freedom we give them while we are there and we love the extra eating, drinking, swimming, eating, drinking, swimming, eat…. You get my point.
A few other families do this trip with us every year and our kids play together which gives us SPACE! One of the secrets to a top notch holiday when you have kids is to make sure there are other kids there. It is essential. I have learnt the hard way on many a trip and now force our mates to come on every vacay with us.
Now if you are a Byron frequenter OR if you have never been (you mad bat), this is my Byron Bible; a little guide of the best things to do in town and my fave place to stay.
Without further ado:
FOOD- So many good places to fill your gullet in Byron and some of my faves are:
Folk: This place is a converted weatherboard cottage that was a well-kept secret until now. It is right where you enter the camping ground and the food and coffee is sooo yum. It is kid friendly as all the seating is outside and they often have picnic rugs out to laze on and eat really fresh, yummy food.
Three Blue Ducks at The Farm: The food here is SO. GOOD! And The Farm is the best place to let your kids run wild, play on the big playground they have and go and say hello to all of the animals because it is an actual working farm. We have done breakfast, lunch and dinner here and loved it all. All of the food is sourced from the farm and there is a great little shop there that you can stack up on fresh produce to take home.
Figtree: This is a converted house that overlooks the hinterlands and water. There is a MASSIVE fig tree next that you can take a drink out and sip on while you watch the sun set. I had one of my favourite days here with good friends and awesome food.
The General Store: This is new and the food and coffee is GOOD! There is a little play area for young kids and it has a simple yet rustic vibe. Breakfast and lunch is fresh and healthy and they offer every milk under the sun which is great for fussy nuts like myself. It’s located on Bangalow Road, opposite where we stayed this year, so was super handy and frequently visited this trip.
Other goodies: Top shop, Harvest Café in Newrybar (20 mins from Byron), 100 Mile table, Combi, Roadhouse.
Where to stay:
I like staying right in town so we can walk everywhere and this year we stayed in an EPIC house. Big enough for two families or four couples which obviously makes it more cost effective. The house is called Elevation and includes four bedrooms and bathrooms, a pool (which annoyingly a lot of Byron rentals don’t have so this is a big plus) and can sleep eight peeps or more if people want to crash on THE WORLD’S BIGGEST COUCH. There was an awesome outdoor areas for BBQ dinners and it’s just a short stroll from town.
Elevation is an architecturally designed pad that is all about indoor/outdoor living which is what you want in Byron cause the weather is so bloody good. The place is also elevated (now you get the name) so you get the sea breeze through the windows. There are bikes at the house you can use which makes it handy to jump on and cruise to town. It’s a winner winner chicken dinner. Check out images below.
What to do besides go to the beach:
Walk to the Lighhouse– This is a must-do when in Byron. You can get a good work out and the views are incredible. It is never not magic when you get to the top and look out!
Fish n’ Chips at Wategos– Grab some gourmet fish n chips from Fishmongers and go and watch the sun set. Our kids love running and jumping in the water while the sun is going down. This is one of my fave things to do in Byron.
Brunswick Heads- Go there for the day and cruise the cute shops and hire a stand up paddle board and jump off the pier. Also the Bakery is a goodie here. There is also a quiet beach we found here that is so special. Its called Harry’s Hills Beach and we spent the whole day there- take a packed lunch.
Circus Arts- This is the bee’s knees for the kids. My son LOVED these circus classes and it gave us a nice break too. It is reasonably priced and the kids do all different forms of circus activities.
Bangalow- It is a really pretty drive through some of the Hinterlands too. Bangalow is the cutest town that also has great markets.
Would love to hear any tips you have.
