If you are lucky enough to have the bestest friend in the world, you go above and beyond for them. You have each other’s back and go through life’s ups and down’s together. Just like these girls did. This story is of a true and incredible friendship.
Laura Ruffino and Elizabeth Diamond had been best friends since Grade Five, so naturally Laura was devastated and heart broken when her childhood friend, Elizabeth, was diagnosed with Stage 4 brain cancer in August last year.
Both ladies were young mum’s, although Elizabeth was bringing up her four daughters alone. Her girls are aged between five and 12 years old. After Elizabeth found out about her diagnosis she turned to her best friend Laura, who is a mother of two young girls and said, “if anything ever happens to me I want you to take my girls”. Laura didn’t hesitate for one second and reassured her best friend that of course she would.
In April, Elizabeth sadly lost her battle with brain cancer and her best friend Laura made good on her promise.
Laura and her husband Rico instantly went from two to six girls. “When I sit back and I think about it, it’s hard to think about because it’s still shocking to me. This is a really big thing, but to us, it’s just our life,” Laura said.
Their local community in Buffalo, New York is trying to support the family who have been put under financial pressure due to taking in the children. One local gave them a larger dining table, while another family donated a larger fridge.
The local Buffalo Wellness Centre have set up a fundraising page to help, as the family receive no other financial support for taking on the four girls. On their website they say; “The Ruffino family have always been the type of people to help others… this family is doing everything in their power to make the Diamond daughters feel loved and part of the family. It is the most beautiful thing we have ever seen.”
What an incredible best friend. This is what true friendship is all about.
