Having trouble finding your forever lover? Well fear not, because Facebook is here to help. According to head honcho Mark Zuckerberg at yesterday’s F8 developer conference, the social media empire is launching ‘Dating‘, a new feature aimed at connecting peeps who are looking for love. Not to be confused with some of the other dating platforms, Facebook Dating is said to be focused solely on establishing meaningful, long-term relationships and not just “hook-ups.” With 200 million of Facebook’s 2 BILLION users identifying as single (and potentially ready to mingle), this opens up a ‘UGE pool of potential lovers.
So, how will it work? Firstly, the most important thing to know is that your Dating profile will be totally separate from your standard Facey profile. This is excellent, because it means that none of your friends will be able to
snoop see what’s going on in your Dating life, PLUS, your friends won’t pop up in your feed as possible matches for you, cutting down on the awkies factor. Profiles will be first name only too.
Facebook will share groups or events based on your interests and you’ll be able to see other users who are attending with the idea that it mimics ‘real’ dating of ye olden days. So, if you’re looking for a guy or gal who really loves quilting and single-malt whisky, then you might just want to check out who’s going to that boozy quilting convention happening in your area. You’ll also have a specific inbox set up just for Dating, which will be text only. Translation: No more unwanted dick pics from creeps wanting to show you their junk.
Is this a good idea? Will it work? Will Facebook take over the entire planet? Only time will tell. But for now, you can look forward to Dating launching on a screen near you later this year.
