When I was four years old, my mother was in hospital giving birth to her third child. As family legend tells it, I threw a tantrum of epic proportions in the hospital waiting room when I found out I was the recipient of a second brother. At the top of my lungs I screamed “It’s not a boy, I want a sissssster!” Now don’t get me wrong I love my brothers to pieces (most of the time) but I’ve never stopped feeling that I missed out when I didn’t get a sister.
When I was 21-years-old my mother died in a car accident. It was a devastating life changing moment and twenty years later I still miss her SO much. In the crazy aftermath of grief my dad, two brothers and I clung together in our loss. We’ve been closer ever since and for a long time it was just me and my boy gang. As much as I love them I did miss that female energy in my family. So ten years ago, when my brothers both met their partners in the space of a month, to say I was excited is an understatement.
I know that not everyone gets along with their sister-in-law, but I just adore mine. I love the energy they bring to my family, and I consider them both great friends. They are both amazing aunties to my two daughters, they get all the family stuff that other people don’t understand, plus they put up with my brothers! However to me they are not just my friends who listen to my problems, support and love me – they are the sisters I always wanted. I feel incredibly lucky to have them.
Since Meghan Markle got engaged to Prince Harry there has been constant press about her imagined feud with sister-in-law Kate Middleton. Meghan has already described Kate as ‘wonderful’ and being the newbies in the Windsor family would be a unique bonding experience. I think these sister-in-laws will totally be besties!
Do you have a sister-in-law you adore?
