When our kids are little, keeping them ‘happy’ seems relatively easy. Loads of love, positive reinforcement, food, sport, fun experiences and an endless supply of hugs will generally do the trick in most cases, but as they get older and enter into adulthood, filling their cup with happiness is somewhat out of our hands.
However, 61-year-old Cecile Eledge recently gave her 32-year-old son Matthew and his husband, Elliott, the most incredible gift you could imagine.
When Matthew and Elliott decided that they wanted to start a family, Cecile stepped in and offered to become their surrogate. In a statement given to Nebraska Medicine Centre, the US-based supermum said of her decision to carry her grandchild, “There was no moment of hesitation. It was natural instinct.”
So, after testing to ensure she was physically capable to go through with the pregnancy (she had delivered her last child 30 years ago and had gone through menopause ten years ago), Cecile grew her new grandchild inside her womb for nine months and on March 25, delivered a beautiful little girl named Uma while her proud dads watched on.
“There was no moment of hesitation. It was natural instinct.”
Uma’s life was one grown from love from the very beginning.
“When you are gay and married and want to have a kid, you go into it with knowledge that you are going to have to create a family in a special way,” said Matthew. “There are creative, unique ways to build a family.”
In addition to being carried by Cecile, the egg provided to make Uma’s life a reality was provided by Elliot’s sister, Lea, and the sperm came from Matthew. “The whole experience behind it all has been so special. The acts of kindness that went into all this, and all the support has been truly humbling,” Matthew told Daily Mail.
“Uma will now have some incredible female role models to look up to in Lea and my mother. I can’t wait for her to develop an incredibly special bond with them both.”
