Don’t we all love a good tear jerker? I know I do. What exactly is it that makes us want to sit down an howl uncontrollably during certain movies?! With winter officially here, there is nothing better than getting cosy under a doona and re-watching some classic tear jerker flicks! Our tears can out do the rain any day.

Ladies, here are the top five movies, that are 100% guaranteed to make  you ugly cry!

Note that there are some massive SPOILERS coming up – so if you haven’t seen the movie maybe skip forward so it isn’t ruined (and promptly rent it ASAP as these are unmissable!).

The Notebook

This movie cemented Ryan Gosling on every teenage girls bedroom wall! Noah. Ally. THAT beach scene. Enough said.

The notebook

When you will get teary:

When Noah tells Ally, “It wasn’t over! It still isn’t over!”. OH GOD THE TEARS!!!!

When you will ugly cry:

Atonement is based on a novel (by Ian McEwan) and stars James McAvoy and Keira Knightley. The movie begins in the 1930s, and tells the story of a crime and its consequences over a period of 60 years.

When you will get teary: When Robbie loses everything for a crime he didn’t commit. The INJUSTICE! The BETRAYAL! The actual very real anger you feel questioning how is this possible?! HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN?!

When you will ugly cry:

My Girl

My Girl is the 1991 classic drama, a coming of age story about a young girl who faces the roller coaster of emotions that come with growing up. Starring Anna Chlumsky and Macaulay Culkin, My Girl will have you reaching for a second box of tissues.

When you will get teary: When Thomas J goes into the forest to find 11-year-old Vada’s ring. He gets stung by hornets and dies from his allergies, and this my friends will leave any tween-ager who decides to watch My Girl, because it seems like it might be a nice movie, forever untrusting about where a movie is going for the rest of their time on earth. WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE DIED???? SERIOUSLY?!

When you will ugly cry:

P.S I Love You

P.S I Love You is the 2007 movie designed to leave women world wide gasping for air whilst simultaneously turning up the volume on their TV because they can’t hear what the characters are saying through the uncontrollably loud, aggressive sobbing that will ensue.

The film is also based on the 2004 novel by Cecelia Ahern and stars Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. The story evolves around Holly and Gerry who are deeply in love, and are tragically torn apart.

P.S. I Love You

When you will get teary: When Gerry dies. When Holly receives the first letter on her 30th birthday. And the second letter. And the third. And probably from then until the credits.

A Walk To Remember

Alright Nicholas Sparks…I’m onto you. You wrote The Notebook AND A Walk To Remember. Wait…AND DEAR JOHN?!?! WHAT?!? Is it your aim in life to break as many hearts worldwide as possible? Because it’s working, it’s definitely working…but I have learnt my lesson and I sure as hell won’t be seeing A Bend in the Road when it comes out next year (okay this is a lie, I totally will be seeing it…alone…in a dark room…with bulk tissues and top deck chocolate). But I make the same mistake twice and see a flick like this in a public cinema, as I did with A Walk to Remember, and shamelessly sobbed my eyes out in front of a teenage boy who will remain unnamed, and didn’t return my phone calls after our movie date.

But back to A Walk To Remember.

A Walk to Remember centres around two high school students, Jamie and Landon (played by Mandy Moore and Shane West). Landon is the popular bad boy of the school, and Jamie is the bookish quiet type. When Jamie helps Landon with his lines, she tells him not to fall in love with her, and from this point forward you will be reaching for the tissues.

When you will get teary:

When bad boy Landon helps Jamie who is dying of leukaemia complete all the items on her bucket list.
