For a while now, Jimmy Kimmel has been getting celebrities to read mean tweets about themselves on his show. The tweets are so foul and offensive, but, when the celebrities read them out it seems to take the power away from the horrendous words and we all have a laugh about them.
Social media is a blessing and equal parts a curse. For majority of us we use social media to keep in touch, do a little stalking and waste some time. For other people, social media is a place where revolting and harmful words can be hurled with no repercussions.
Women in the media/entertainment are often targets for this kind of abuse on social media.
For some reason, there are some people that feel they have a right to comment on a women’s looks, weight, clothes, hair etc… These kinds of comments, although completely unnecessary and gutless in delivery, can often just be ignored.
It’s when the tweets/comments become aggressive, abusive and threatening that they become a serious issue.
Mamamia have created a powerful video of well-known Australian women reading mean tweets about themselves. You will find yourself laughing at the start and then feeling extremely disturbed at the end. Make sure you watch the whole thing.
Saying you don’t like the way someone’s hair looks is one thing, but, threats of rape, physical violence and involving family members is a whole other ball game. Didn’t everyone’s mum teach them that if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all?
This really strips away the fun and innocence of social media and makes it a scary place to play.
Have you had any bad experiences with comments on social media?
