The fabulous Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandburg, has championed a new public awareness campaign called #LeanInTogether.
It was over two years ago that Sheryl started the ‘Lean In’ movement when she released her book encouraging women to ‘Lean In’ to their career goals, ask for the raise that is deserved, support each other and a million other incredibly important messages for women.
#LeanInTogether goes a little further than ‘Lean In’, as it calls on men to throw their support behind gender equality.
To me, this step is as crucial as women leaning in. It takes everyone to make the ‘Leaning In’ part possible.
Sheryl told CNN that, “The conversation about equality has long existed by women, for women, in women’s forums where women are, and that will continue, and that’s important.”
“But bringing it to the centre of the court, bringing men to the centre of that conversation — people like LeBron James, Steph Curry and Dwayne Wade, saying, ‘I’m in for equality and here’s why’ — I think that could be transformative.”
I wholeheartedly agree, we need a transformation here. We have come so far but we still have a long way to go. As in recent weeks the pay gap between men and women grew even larger. Are we serious? Still? We need men and women making a stand for equality. It is a human issue, not just a gender one.
Some well known men around the world have thrown their support behind #LeanInTogether and let’s hope over time, majority of men follow suit. The definition of being a feminist is simply believing in equality. The ‘F’ word is far from dirty, and the more men that start to identify as feminists, the quicker change with take place.
Are the men in your life all for equality?
