Ah, periods. I couldn’t wait to get mine. I was twelve years old and when it finally came I was the happiest kid on the block. I’ll never forget my mum even bought me a gift and it was THE BEST present ever. Prince’s Diamonds and Pearls album on cassette. Happy days. My young world was all about my two favourite P’s – Prince and Pads. I was a total grown-up.
Once I was over the initial novelty of it all, shark week became an annoying monthly reality that I started to dread and as a person who suffers from pretty severe PMS, so did everyone around me. My mood swings are fierce, my emotions are all over the place and in all honesty, for a few days I am a total cow.
Our relationship with our periods differ during the many stages of our lives. There are those times you have anxiously waited to get it and when the fear of an unplanned pregnancy looms, seeing that red-streaked toilet paper is like a gift from the gods. When you’re trying for a family, that red-streaked paper means something else again – total disappointment.
